I get it. I've been there.For over 25 years, I struggled with hair pulling. I listened to the experts, got certified to treat others with body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), and was still pulling out my own hair.
I followed all the advice and wound up exhausted from fighting the urges. I couldn't understand why shame wasn't enough to make me stop.
Then it finally clicked:
I wasn't fighting a habit problem.
I was fighting a regulation problem.
My brain was overwhelmed and trying to cope – and hair pulling was the tool it used. It took me decades to realize that the habit was actually soothing me, and it was the consequences – not the behavior – that I found so frustrating.
Once I understood that, everything changed.
I stopped trying to fight the urges and sought to understand them instead. I started addressing the underlying dysregulation that I had discovered was the root cause.
And when I did? The urges naturally subsided –
without white-knuckling it.
